The
DELTA System
The
DELTA format (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) is a
method for encoding taxonomic descriptions for computer
processing. It has been adopted by the International Taxonomic
Databases Working Group (TDWG) as a standard for data exchange.
DELTA-format data can be used to produce natural-language
descriptions, interactive or conventional keys, cladistic or phenetic
classifications, and information-retrieval systems.
Species descriptions provided through the Cycad Pages have been generated
using the DELTA system, and the multiple-entry identification
tables provided also draw on the DELTA data files.
For more information on DELTA software and examples of datasets,

Biodiversity and Biological Collections Web Server.
