Family CYMODOCEACEAE

Description: Dioecious submerged marine rhizomatous perennials.

Leaves distichous, alternate; blade flat and linear or terete and subulate; sheathing at base, sheath ligulate and auriculate.

Flowers solitary or in cymose inflorescences. Perianth absent or rarely of 1–few hyaline bracts. Male flowers subsessile or pedicellate; anthers 2, 4-sporangiate, extrorse, dehiscing by longitudinal slits; pollen grains filiform and tightly coiled within the anther. Female flowers with 1 or 2 sessile or stipitate carpels; style 1 or 2 each with 2 or 3 filiform stigmas.

Fruit a 1-seeded nutlet, viviparous in some genera.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 5 genera, 16 species, around Indian & Pacific Oceans. Australia: 5 genera, 12 species, all States.
