Family PETERMANNIACEAE

Description: Perennial vines with small prickles on stems, tuber ± swollen; tendrils present.

Leaves alternate, lamina with 3–7 longitudinal veins and reticulate secondary venation; stipules absent.

Inflorescence a terminal or leaf-opposed pedunculate compound cymes, sometimes peduncles sterile and modified into tendrils. Flowers actinomorphic, 3-merous, bisexual. Tepals 6, in 2 whorls. Stamens usually 6; filaments free or fused at base; anthers 1- or 2-locular, extrorse, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior, incompletely 1-locular; placentation parietal; ovules numerous; stigma capitate.

Fruit a berry; seeds numerous.
