Family SCHIZAEACEAE

Description: Terrestrial ferns; rhizome usually short-creeping, sometimes long-creeping or erect, the young parts covered with segmented hairs.

Fronds varying from dichotomously divided to pinnate, vernation circinate; veins mostly free.

Sporangia borne on specialized segments of the fronds, these segments arranged around the margins of pinnate fronds or in small pinnate groups at the apex of the frond or of its branches; sporangia relatively large, ovoid or ellipsoid, splitting longitudinally.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 3 genera, c. 72 species, tropical to temperate regions. Australia: 2 genera, 10 species, all States.
