Description: Climbers, [trees or shrubs].

Leaves mostly opposite, simple, oil-dotted; stipules absent.

Inflorescences axillary or terminal, racemose, simple or branched. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual or male. Perianth segments 2–many, spirally arranged. Stamens 6–many, free, the anthers with an appendage, anther and filament equal in length, dehiscence [latrorse] or extrorse. Carpel solitary, ovary superior, 2- or 1-locular, stigma sessile on ovary.

Fruit a berry.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 or 2 genera, 5–9 species, tropical & subtropical, Celebes, Moluccas, New Guinea, Australia, New Caledonia, Fiji, Samoa, Marquesas Is. Australia: 1 genus, 1 species
