Genus Bruguiera Family Rhizophoraceae

Description: Buttressed trees to 12 m high.

Leaves leathery; stipules lanceolate.

Flowers axillary, solitary or in 2–10-flowered cymes; bracteoles absent. Hypanthium prolonged above ovary and confluent with the calyx lobes. Calyx lobes 8–16. Corolla lobes 8–16. Stamens twice as many as petals, in pairs opposite the petals. Ovary inferior, 2–4-locular.

Fruit 1-seeded, viviparous.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 6 species, tropical E. Africa, Asia, Polynesia. Australia: 5 species (native), Qld., N.S.W., N.T., W.A.
