Genus Chthonocephalus Family Asteraceae

Description: Annual herbs, prostrate to ascending; basal rosette or stem branched ± near basal nodes.

Leaves alternate or basal, sessile, entire, non-glandular cobwebby or villous.

Heads compound, terminal, sessile; general involucral bracts absent or 1–several series of hyaline or leaf-like bracts; general receptacle disc-shaped, solid or ± branched; involucral bracts of partial heads 1-seriate, c. 6, midrib opaque green, apex and margins hyaline, margins ciliate, midrib hairy or glabrous; scales usually present on partial receptacle, subtending 1 rarely 2 florets. Florets 2–40 per partial head, tubular, bisexual; corolla 3–5-toothed. Stamens 3–5; anthers tailed, terminal appendage present. Style branches truncate, with short sweeping hairs.

Achenes obovoid, glabrous; pappus absent or plumose bristles.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 6 species, endemic Australia. Australia: all mainland States.
