Genus Maundia Family Maundiaceae

Description: Erect rhizomatous perennial herbs.

Leaves spongy, inflated.

Inflorescence spicate. Flowers bisexual, 2-merous. Flower structure variously interpreted, either as having 2 perianth segments or these treated as 2 bracts. Stamens (i) 12 and each 2-locular, or (ii) these treated as the outer 6 being perianth segments and the inner 6 being stamens, or (iii) 12 1-locular stamens fused in pairs; all 12 produce pollen and dehisce extrorsely, thus favouring the first interpretation. Carpels usually 4, fused almost to the apex.

Individual fruit dehiscing and remaining fused to central axis.
