Genus Phylloglossum Family Lycopodiaceae

Description: Terrestrial plants; stem reduced to a tuber which is covered with papery scale leaves and usually with 1 lateral root. Aerial portion dies down each year; leaves grow in spring from new tubers which have formed laterally.

Leaves clustered at top of tuber, usually <10.

Strobilus terminal on a leafless fleshy stalk longer than the leaves; sporophylls spirally arranged and overlapping but spreading when sporangia ripe; sporangium in axil of each sporophyll.
