Description: Terrestrial ferns; rhizome creeping, covered with hairs.
Fronds dimorphic, one type short, linear, simple and inconspicuous, the other long and slender with numerous pouch-like pinnae on each side of the rachis. Fertile pinnae somewhat larger than the sterile pinnae, borne on the second type of frond in zones in the upper portion of the fronds; veins free.
Sori of only 2–4 sporangia; sporangia attached laterally along the veins; spores of 2 kinds.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, endemic Australia. Australia: 1 species, endemic.
Characters and distribution as for family. Platyzoma is sometimes treated as a synonym of Pteris.
