Abelmoschus manihot subsp. manihot (L.) Medik. APNI* Description: Erect herb or subshrub 1–3 m high; stems with spreading simple, few-branched or stellate hairs, sometimes glabrous.
Leaves variable, to 20 cm long and wide, deeply 3–7-lobed, lobes coarsely toothed to ± lobed or ± entire, glabrous to hairy; petiole to 20 cm long; stipules to c. 15 mm long.
Flowers solitary in axils or in racemes; pedicels to 7 cm long in fruit. Epicalyx segments 4–6, 10–30 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, ± persistent. Calyx c. 3 cm long. Petals 5–7 cm long, white or yellow with a small purple spot at base.
Capsule ± ovoid, 3–6 cm long, ± densely hairy.
Distribution and occurrence: Only 1 record from Kyogle in 1940. Probably native of SE Asia & N Aust.
