Description: Caespitose perennials to c. 70 cm tall.

Sheaths glabrous or hairy; auricles 0–1.7 mm long; ligule 0.5–0.6 mm long, truncate; blade flat, 1.8–7 mm wide.

Inflorescence spicate, to c. 50 cm long, with 6–18 spikelets solitary at each node. Spikelets 16–35 mm long, 4–10-flowered. Glumes subequal, lower 3.4–7.9 mm long, muticous or with an awn 0.4–1.3 mm long; upper glume 5.2–9.2 mm long, muticous or with an awn 0.3–1.2 mm long. Lemmas 6.9–12.5 mm long, 5-nerved, glabrous or scabrous, mucronate, muticous or with an awn remaining straight when dry; lowest lemma muticous , mucronate or with an awn 0–3 mm long, remaining lemmas with awn 0–11.5 mm long; palea 90–100% lemma length.

Caryopsis 60–70% palea length.
