Silene vulgaris subsp. vulgaris (Moench) Garcke APNI* 
Description: Perennial herb to 1 m high, usually erect, green, sometimes glaucous, glabrous or almost so.
Leaves ovate to lanceolate or elliptic, usually 20–50 mm long, 4–10 mm wide.
Flowers bisexual or unisexual; pedicels drooping, c. 5–30 mm long. Bracts usually 3–6 mm long, 1–3 mm wide. Calyx mostly 8–15 mm long, ± glabrous, 20–30-veined, bladdery in fruit. Petals 10–20 mm long, deeply bifid, white; erect appendages inconspicuous. Styles 3. Ovary 1-locular.
Capsule ovoid to oblong, 5–10 mm long, opening by 6 small teeth.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Weed of pastures and crops. Native of Eur. & W Asia.
