Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. APNI*

Description: Semi-erect to erect perennial shrub up to 1 m high. Stem often viscid varying in indumentum from nearly glabrous to densely pilose, often with bristles.

Leaves with varying indumentum as for stems. Leaflets elliptic to lanceolate, not more than 8 times longer than wide, 5–45 mm long, 2–20 mm wide. Petioles 1–12 mm long. Sheath of stipules 2–15 mm long, the teeth 2–10 mm long.

Inflorescence terminal or axillary, from 1–40-flowered, each with a unifoliate outer bract, the sheath 3–7 mm long, one outer bracteole 2.5–5.5 mm long, one inner bracteole 2–4.5 mm long, axis rudiment absent. Calyx tube 4–8 mm long, lobes 3–5 mm long. Standard yellow to orange, often stripped black, 4–8 mm long, 3–5 mm wide; wings and keel petals 3.5–5 mm long.

Fruit a pod 2–3 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm wide, smooth, often dark coloured. Beak minute, 0.1–0.8 mm long, strongly inflexed. Seeds pale brown or purple.


Flowering: Flowers most of the year.

Distribution and occurrence: Native to Central America. Naturalised north of Grafton on the North Coast.

Growing in pasture and along roadsides.
