Description: Shrub to 2.5 m high; indumentum on branchlets, calyces, etc. brown to dark grey, hairs curly below with a profusion of long (?1 mm), spreading hairs protruding.

Leaves with lamina very narrow-oblong to very narrowly oblong-elliptic, sometimes narrow-oblong, very narrow-elliptic or narrow-oblanceolate, mostly 2.5–5 cm long, 4–7 mm wide; lamina strongly arched from the midrib, margins recurved to revolute, sometimes strongly revolute, upper surface glabrous, venation slightly to moderately raised, sometimes only secondary veins raised, sometimes with knobbly projections from vein junctions, lower surface with coiled, curled or crumpled hairs, often obscured by a dense overstorey of long, spreading hairs; petiole 2–4 mm long; stipules 3–5 mm long.

Inflorescences mostly sessile, mostly 2-flowered, pedicels 2–3 mm long. Calyx 5–6.5 mm long.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in sclerophyll forest on various substrates including rhyolite outcrops, predominantly south from the Blue Mtns.
NSW subdivisions: NC, CC, SC, CT, ST, CWS
Other Australian states: Vic.

Previously incorrectly named H. purpurea Sweet (see Ross 1991. A form of H. pannosa in Deua N.P. near Moruya differs from the typical form by having glossier, smoother leaves with flatter margins.
