Ammobium alatum R.Br. APNI*

Description: Perennial or facultative annual, 60–100 cm high; stems usually much-branched, winged, woolly.

Basal leaves with lamina narrow-ovate to ± hastate, mostly 4–6 cm long, 10–15 mm wide, apex acuminate, both surfaces ± woolly, petiole 7–10 cm long, winged; cauline leaves few, bract-like, sessile.

Heads c. 10 mm diam.; involucral bracts 5–10 mm long, white, papery, margins jagged, usually longer than florets; receptacle scales herbaceous becoming rigid, usually truncate with a jagged edge and a well-developed mucro; central region black, margins ± hyaline. Florets yellow, becoming darker with age.

Achenes 3–4 mm long, ± grooved, dark brown; pappus cup c. 0.5 mm long, awns < 0.5 mm long.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland and woodland, sometimes covering extensive areas, common on roadsides; widespread, north from Jindabyne area.
