Synonyms: Ceratochloa brevis Nees ex Steud. APNI*

Description: Annual or biennial, sometimes rhizomatous, to 0.6 m high; culms stout, ascending.

Leaves with sheath loose, villous on margins; ligule obtuse, laciniate, to 5 mm long; blade to 5 mm wide, villous.

Panicle 3.5–20 cm long, usually compact, especially near the top; pedicels usually c. 5 mm long. Spikelets mostly 9–20 mm long, mostly erect, the lowermost sometimes slightly drooping. Glumes acute, lower linear-lanceolate, 5–7-nerved, 5.5–10 mm long; upper lanceolate, 7- or 8-nerved, 7–10.5 mm long. Lemmas lanceolate, 5–9-nerved, 5–11 mm long; awns, if present, to 3 mm long. Palea 60–80% the length of the lemma.


Flowering: spring.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in disturbed areas, especially on granitic soils. Native of S Amer.
