Cycads in Madagascar

One cycad is known from Madagascar, Cycas thouarsii (of the family Cycadaceae). It occurs in coastal forests of the north and north-east, and also on the nearby Comorro Islands, with sporadic occurrences on the adjacent coast of mainland Africa. Some argue that the African occurrences are not natural. Cycas thouarsii is a member of the widespread Cycas rumphii group, which has floating seeds for aquatic dispersal.
