South-eastern Australia (south of the Tropic of Capricorn) is the
centre for Macrozamia
(Zamiaceae),
with 32 species in the region at the latest count and probably more to come.
The greatest diversity within the genus occurs here, with several
apparently recent evolutionary radiations. Most are understorey
plants of eucalypt forests and woodlands. A single species of
Lepidozamia also occurs here, and
two Cycas
species creep into the far
north of the region.
