Although cycads abundant and widespread in the south-west, only the genus Macrozamia (Zamiaceae) is represented. Three species are now recognised, although species definition in this region has always been difficult and controversial. These occurrences are also a relic of times when more hospitable climates prevailed across southern Australia, as is the central Australian ocurrence.
