Leaves opposite or disjunct opposite, bristle glands and "angophoroid hairs" present at least in juvenile stages, "Arillastrum-type hairs" absent. Oil ducts present in pith and petiole. Crystalliferous fibres present. Paratracheal parenchyma extensive, confluent. Renantherin absent. Phyllotaxy in inflorescence fixed, opposite. Flowers pedicellate or sessile (anthopodia present or absent), variably 5-4-merous or fixed 4-merous. Stamens numerous, not bundled in mature flowers. Ovary with 3-4 carpels; vasculature trans-septal, ovules hemitropous to campylotropous, not arranged in distinct vertical rows on the placenta. Outer integument of ovule without crystalline inner epidermis; seed testa derived from 2 integuments.
