Metrosideros salicifolia Sol. ex Gaertn., Fruct. Sem. Pl. 1: 171 (1788).
TYPE: Gaertner used material from Banks and Solander's collections for his illustrations, much of which was then apparently discarded. Some type material is held at TUB, although no type for this taxon has been reported. Additional searches may locate such material, but unless this occurs, Gaertner's figure must be accepted as the holotype (Fruct. Sem. Pl., Tab. 34, fig. 3, left hand part). Gaertner describes 2 forms, a and B, of M. salicifolia. Form a probably represents E. crebra, and the identify of form B is uncertain (see Blake, 1953). A duplicate of Banks and Solander's collection held at NSW is E. crebra (in part), but bears no fruit. It is not known if other duplicates bear fruit, and if they do in fact match Gaertner's figure.
