Description: L43.9um, Br. 41.4um, Isth.16.8um (fig. 10e). The type variety has been previously recorded from Victoria as Staurastrum brevispina by Hardy (1905 & 1906) and Gibbons (1874) (as Staurastrum brevispinum), both of whom did not illustrate or give measurements. Staurodesmus brevispina v. altus (West) Teiling differs from the typical in having a strongly convex apical part of the semicell and is smaller. (Dingley 2001)
