Cosmarium australiense Coesel & Dingley Zygnematophyceae AlgaeBase*

Class Zygnematophyceae
Family Desmidiaceae

Synonyms: Cosmarium pseudoprotuberans var. tumidum Borge AlgaeBase*

State distribution in Australia, based on available literature

When Kirchner (1878) described Cosmarium pseudoprotuberans from Silesia he did not provide any illustrations. The first picture of this species was by Nordstedt (1885) from Greenland, copied in the well-known flora of West & West (1908). Since then many different varieties and formae have been described, see eg Krieger & Gerloff (1965). Already at a first glance it is clear that many of those infraspecific taxa have little to do with the nominate variety as conceived by West & West. Also var. tumidum, described by Borge (1911) from Queensland, Australia, with its markedly thickened basal and lateral angles differs from var. pseudoprotuberans such that it deserves the status of a species of its own. (Coesel & Dingley 2005)
