Census of Freshwater Algae in Australia

Compiled and edited by Tim Entwisle and Lucy Nairn.

Cosmarium doidgei F.E.Fritsch & F.Rich Zygnematophyceae AlgaeBase*

Class Zygnematophyceae
Family Desmidiaceae

Description: L 15.9um, Br 16.1um, I 6.0um, Th 10.2um. This taxon is remarkably similar to the one described by Fritsch and Rich (1937) in that the retuse character of the upper lateral margins, combined with the widening of the sinus towards the outside, gives the lateral angles of the semicells the appearance of being slightly upturned. Only one cell was found in the sample and more cells should be examined to make sure that it is the same taxon. If so, it will be a new record for Australia. (Dingley 2003)
