Genus Adonis Family Ranunculaceae

Description: Annual or perennial herbs with leafy stems.

Leaves alternate, 2–4-pinnate with linear segments.

Flowers usually solitary, actinomorphic, bisexual. Sepals 5–8, green or purple, ± petaloid. Petals 3–20, without a nectary. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous.

Fruit an oblong head of wrinkled achenes.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 20 species, Europe & temperate Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
