Distribution and occurrence: Arid and semi arid parts of NSW and Queensland. South of 20 degrees S and west of 144 degrees E.

Found in open shrubland or woodland on sand or sandy loams. Recorded dominant trees and shrubs include Acacia aneura, A. harpophylla, Callitris glaucophylla, Eremophila gilesii, Eucalyptus crebra, E. populifolia and a species of Melaleuca, while associated grasses include Chloris pectinata, Eragrostis lacunaria, Paspalidium constrictum and Sporobolus caroli.

The subspecific name lophoptera is derived from the Greek words, lopho, ridge, and pterus (adj. A), winged, in reference to the thick, ridged wings of the fruit.
