Agrostis gigantea Roth APNI*

Description: Erect, rhizomatous, tufted perennial to 1 m high; culms 4–6-noded.

Leaves with sheath shallowly grooved, split; ligule obtuse, laciniate, 1.5–6 mm long; blade flat, acute to attenuate, 1–8 mm wide.

Panicle oblong, loose during flowering, to 30 cm long. Spikelets c. 2 mm long. Glumes lanceolate, acute to acuminate, lower glume slightly longer. Lemma truncate to minutely toothed, 1.5–2 mm long, awnless or rarely minutely awned. Palea c.50% the length of the lemma.


Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows near water. Native of Eur., Asia & N Amer.
