The above description is from Flora of NSW 3 (1992), as Astrotricha sp. B, and needs revising to include the full range of morphological variation of A. asperifolia across its geographic range, which includes Victoria. Two phrase name subspecies were recognised by Henwood, M.J., Makinson, R.O. & Maling, K.L. in Walsh, N.G. & Entwisle, T.J. (ed.) (1999), Araliaceae. Flora of Victoria 4: 246, with only the typical subspecies, subsp. 1 (= Astrotricha asperiifolia subsp. .Toolangi (N.G.Walsh 2177) Vic. Herbarium) extending to NSW. However, they note that occasional NSW specimens approach subsp. 2 (= Astrotricha asperifolia subsp. Bogong (H.I.Aston 246) Vic. Herbarium). Note added K.L. Gibbons, Jan 2020.
