Avena ludoviciana Durieu APNI*

Description: Robust annual to 1.5 m high.

Leaves with ligule obtuse to acute, 0.5–8 mm long; blade to 18 mm wide, occasionally with scattered long hairs.

Panicle loose, pyramidal, 10–45 cm long. Spikelets 25–30 mm long, with 2 or 3 florets, disarticulating between glumes and lowest lemma only. Glumes subequal, acute, 14–32 mm long, glabrous. Lemmas ovate, 10–25 mm long, lowest 60% clothed with long silky hairs; notched at the tip with short teeth; 2 lower florets awned, awn dark, 17–60 mm long, geniculate and twisted.


Flowering: spring.

Distribution and occurrence: A widespread weed of cereal and other crops. Native to Eur. & W Asia.
