Coprosma inopinata I.Hutton & P.S.Green APNI*

Description: Compact shrub, scrambling or prostrate with shoots to 0.5 m high. Young stems minutely hairy.

Leaves rather crowded, leathery, not foetid-smelling when bruised. Petiole 1–2 mm long, glabrous; blade broadly lanceolate to elliptic, 7–13 mm long, 3–6 mm wide, base rounded-obtuse, margins slightly thickened and sometimes slightly recurved, apex acute or sometimes slightly acuminate; venation reticulate below, primary veins not strongly differentiated, 4 or 5 on each side of midrib; domatia absent; stipules 3–5 mm long with a rigid, usually persisten acumen 2–3 mm long.

Male and female flowers solitary. Calyx lobes unequal, to 0.5 mm long. Corolla lobes c. 4 mm long, green with purple margins. Filaments c. 5 mm long, anthers c. 2.5 mm long. Stigma arms c. 3 mm long.

Fruits ovoid, 5–6 mm long, orange.


Distribution and occurrence: Endemic to Lord Howe Island.

Grows on ridges.
