Description: Loosely to densely tufted perennial to 0.8 m high.

Leaves with sheath tightly enclosing culm, shorter than internode, glabrous, margins ciliate with hairs c. 0.5 mm long; ligule a row of cilia 0.5 mm long, with scattered 2–3 mm long hairs; blade flat, rolled when dry, to 6 mm wide, ribbed, margins with rigid tubercle-based hairs 0.5 mm long every 1–2 mm, upper surface glabrous, lower surface with sparse tubercle-based hairs.

Inflorescence paniculate, open, 4–10 cm long; rachis glabrous, axils with hairs c. 0.5 mm long; pedicels flexuous, to 3 cm long. Spikelets of 2 florets. Glumes acuminate, many-nerved, equal, 2–6 mm long, glabrous, margins ciliate. Lemmas covered in silky hairs c. 0.5 mm long; awn terminal, straight, 3–6 mm long. Palea 2-fid, covered with silky hairs.
