Description: Rhizomatous perennial to 1.1 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous with a minutely ciliate rim, 0.5–1 mm long; blade flat or folded, 0.4–14 cm wide, obtuse, ribbed, keel and margins often scabrous, glabrous.

Inflorescence digitate, spikes erect or curved, 9–16 cm long, 1-sided, spikelets in 2 dense rows; axis flattened or angled, scabrous. Spikelets 2.5–3 mm long, sessile; florets 2, usually brown at maturity, the lower floret bisexual, upper floret sterile. Lower glume c. 1.5 mm long, acute, 1-nerved; upper c. 2 mm long, acute, 1-nerved, scabrous, sometimes with a subterminal awn to 0.5 mm long. Lower lemma 2.5–3 mm long, acuminate, smooth, 3-nerved, lateral nerves bearded with silky hairs 0.5–1.5 mm long; palea subequal to lemma. Upper lemma 1.5–2 mm long, obtuse or truncate, 3-nerved, inflated, rough, glabrous;


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grown as a pasture grass and possibly naturalized near experiment stations. Native of Amer.
