Leptochloa decipiens (R.Br.) Stapf ex Maiden APNI*

Description: Tussock-forming perennial to 1.3 m high.

Leaves with ligule membranous, to 1 mm long, obtuse, erose, 1–3 tubercle-based hairs to 1 mm long at each end; blade flat, rolled or folded when dry, to 0.3 cm wide, densely scabrous, sometimes with sparse fine hairs c. 0.3 mm long.

Inflorescence of racemes on a primary axis, 7–23 cm long; racemes to 2–5 cm long. Spikelets 2–5 mm long, 2–6 florets, often with the rachilla extended as a sterile projection to 1 mm long, pedicels to 1.5 mm long, appressed. Glumes with a scabrous keel; lower 0.5 mm long; upper 1–2 mm long, obtuse. Lemma 1.5–2.5 mm long, upper lemmas successively smaller, apex obtuse and erose or 2-toothed, keeled, 3-nerved, lateral nerves to margins silky with hairs to 0.5 mm long or with sparse fine hairs < 0.2 mm long. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, silky with hairs to 0.25 mm long.


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows on floodplains or bordering woodland; north from Camden area.
