Description: Annual to short-lived perennial to c. 1 m high.

Leaves with ligule a membranous ciliate rim, c. 1.0 mm long, including cilia; blade flat or folded, to 0.5 cm wide, scabrous.

Inflorescence of racemes on a central axis, 8–30 cm long, to 12 cm wide; axils pubescent with hairs < 0.25 mm long; racemes 1-sided, 3–16 cm long, upper racemes successively shorter, rachis scabrous. Spikelets to 6 mm long, 4–6 florets; pedicels 0.5–1 mm long, scabrous. Glumes subequal, 3–4 mm long, lower narrower than upper. Lemmas 2–4 mm long, upper lemmas successively smaller, 3-nerved, keeled, lateral nerves to margins silky with hairs c. 0.25 mm long, apex 2-lobed, lobes to 0.5 mm long, with mucro c. 0.5 mm long. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, acute, 2-keeled; keels and apex ciliate.


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Widely cultivated on experimental farms and possibly naturalized. Native of Amer.
