Netrostylis sp. East Coast (D.E. Albrecht 597) APNI*

Description: Tufted perennial with long creeping rhizome to 15 cm long, slender, bracts pale brown; stems stiffly erect to spreading, dark green, subterete to quadrangular, 28–110 cm long, 0.7–1.1 mm broad.

All basal, almost reduced to their sheaths, sheaths 40–97 mm long, 1–1.8 mm broad, red to reddish-brown, striate, papillose between striations, glistening; ligule membranous, blades very fine, 5–21 mm long, scabrous on basal margins.

Inflorescence narrowly lanceolate, 12–45 mm long, 4–10 mm wide, with one lateral branch; involucral bract 16–42 mm long. Spikelets usually 4–8 in a short panicle or raceme, 5.0–6.1 mm long, 2-flowered, the upper flower bisexual, the lower flower functionally male. Glumes 6, spiral but almost distichous, the upper ones shortly ciliate on the margins, the others glabrous; fertile glumes 3.8–4.6 mm long, c. 1.3 mm wide. Style 3-fid, prominently swollen at the bas; hypogynous bristles 6, filiform, barbellulate, not falling with the nut; hypogynous scales united, thickened, forming a ring at the base of the nut; stamens 3.

Nutlet ellipsoid or somewhat obovoid, constricted below the style base, 2.6–2.7 mm long and 1.6–1.7 mm wide; style base persistent, 3.1–3.7 mm long and 0.59–0.61 mm wide, stout, longer than the nutlet.

Distribution and occurrence: Near-coastal regions of NSW. Also in East Gippsland, Victoria, and south-east Queensland.
