Description: Slender perennial, up to c. 45 cm tall.

Leaves with blade narrow, up to 40 cm long, 3.5 mm wide, often tightly inrolled.

Inforescence an erect panicle 5–10 cm long, 1–2.3 mm wide, slightly branched; spikelets 3–8-flowered; glumes 8–15 mm long, with apex acuminate, 5(-7)-veined, dorsally purplish; lemma 2–5 mm long, tinged purplish, deeply biloned, with 2 transvere rows of stiff hairs; lower hairs straight, 2–4 mm long; central awn geniculate, 8–12 mm long, twisted in lower part; palea narrow, 4–5 mm long, glabrous or with a few marginal hairs.


Distribution and occurrence: Occurs in Lord Howe Island; also native to New Zealand.

Recorded as a rare tufted grass growing in dry basalt in goat dung-affected soil.
