Description: Slender perennial to 1.8 m high, with extravaginal innovations.

Leaves with sheath with sparse tubercle-based hairs or almost glabrous; ligule membranous, ciliate, c. 0.75 mm long; blade 1.5–6 mm wide, with sparse tubercle-based hairs or almost glabrous.

Panicle at length long-exserted, loose, to 40 cm long. Spikelets 3–4.5 mm long, mostly acute to acuminate, glabrous. Lower glume obscurely 1–7-nerved, somewhat inflated, obtuse to shortly acute, c. 30% the length of the spikelet; upper 75% the length of the lower lemma, 5–9-nerved, mostly acute to acuminate. Lower lemma usually sterile, rarely male, the shape and size of the spikelet, 5–9-nerved, palea c. 75% the length of the lemma. Upper lemma much shorter than the spikelet, 1.75–2 mm long, smooth and shining, obscurely 5–7-nerved.
