Description: Densely tufted perennial to c. 1 m high with extravaginal innovations.

Leaves with sheath mostly smooth and glabrous; ligule membranous below, ciliate above, c. 2 mm long; blade 3–9.5 mm wide, sometimes sprinkled with long hairs.

Panicle to 40 cm long. Spikelets 2.5–3.5 mm long, glabrous. Lower glume truncate or with a short median point, c. 20–30% the length of the spikelet, nerveless or 1-nerved; upper the shape and size of the spikelet, 5–7-nerved. Lower lemma sterile, similar to the upper glume and 7–9-nerved, palea c. 50–90% as long as the lemma. Upper lemma broad-elliptic, 1.8–2.3 mm long, smooth, shining, at length with prominently paler nerves, usually 7-nerved with a beak-like apex.
