Description: Tufted perennials to c. 1.5 m tall.

Leaf-sheaths glabrous or hirsute, margins glabrous or hairy; ligule an eciliate membrane, 1–3 mm long; blade to c. 35 cm long, 3–9 mm wide, smooth, glabrous or hirsute, margins scabrous.

Inflorescence a panicle of (1-)2–5(-12) spreading 1-sided racemes each 1.5–12 cm long, 2–3.2 mm wide with main axis 1–15 cm long; rachis broadly winged, 1.7–3 mm wide, scabrous on margins. Spikelets paired with pedicels 0.3–1.2 mm long, 2-flowered, lower floret sterile, upper fertile, , obovate, dorsally compressed, plano-convex, obtuse, 1.7–3 mm long, falling entire. Lower glume absent or obscure; upper obovate, 2.1–3 mm long, 100% spikelet length, hyaline or membranous or chartaceous, 3–5-nerved, glabrous or puberulous or villous, margins eciliate, apex obtuse. Lower sterile lemma, without significant palea, similar to upper glume, ovate, 2.1–3 mm long, 100% spikelet length, chartaceous, 3–5-nerved, glabrous or puberulous, obtuse. Upper fertile lemma elliptic or obovate, gibbous, 1.6–3 mm long, indurate, yellow, glossy; margins involute; apex obtuse. Palea involute, indurate.
