Description: Caespitose perennial to 0.6 m high.
Leaves with ligule a ciliate rim of hairs c. 0.5 mm long, usually with a cluster of hairs to 1 mm long at each end; blade rolled, scabrous, glabrous.
Inflorescence open, spreading, 6–17 cm long, 2–11 cm wide; rachis slender. Spikelets 6–10 mm long (excluding awns), gaping to 7 mm wide at maturity, bisexual florets 3, occasionally 4, often with 1 reduced sterile floret; pedicels slender, 6–30 mm long, scabrous. Glumes subequal, 6–10 mm long, 3-nerved, glabrous. Lemmas c. 5 mm long (excluding awn), 8-nerved, lower half silky with hairs to 0.5 mm long, 2-lobed, awned from the sinus; lobes 1.5–2 mm long, subulate, sometimes entwined with awn base; awn 3.5–6 mm long, base reflexed or twisted. Palea slightly shorter than lemma.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Uncommon, in woodland.
