Potamogeton australiensis A.Benn. APNI*

Description: Emergent aquatic perennial herb, rhizomatous. Stems terete, up to 3 m long; turions not recorded.

Stipules convolute. Submerged leaves petiolate and roundish or sessile and lanceolate; blade cordate, truncate, or tapered at base, acute or rounded at apex, to 13.5 cm long, 1.5–3 cm wide. Transition leaves alternate, petiolate and roundish, translucent. Floating leaves coriaceous; blade roundish, apex acute, 2–6.5 cm long, 1.8–5 cm wide, with 19–32 veins.

Inflorescence a spike, emergent, dense, up to 4 cm long, terminal; peduncle erect, becoming bent when fruiting.

Fruit keeled with 3 ridges, the central one more prominent, with prominent beak, 3–4 mm long (including beak).

Distribution and occurrence: From near the Qld-NSW border south along the coast and tablelands to Victoria; also in Tas and SA (?Qld too)

Grows in more or less permanent pools and lagoons, commonly on carbonate- or limestone-derived soils.

Other Australian states: Vic. Tas. S.A.
