Potamogeton cheesemanii A.Benn. APNI*

Description: Emergent aquatic perennial herb, rhizomatous. Stems terete, up to 2 m long; turions not recorded.

Stipules convolute. Submerged leaves sessile to shortly petiolate; blade lanceolate, tapered at apex and base, 5–10 cm long, 0.5–2.5 cm wide. Floating leaves petiolate; blade ovate to lanceolate, tapered to rounded at base, obtuse to apiculate at apex, coriaceous, 1.5–5 cm long, 1.5–3.5 cm wide, with 10–17 veins.

Inflorescence a spike, emergent, dense, 1–2.5 cm long, terminal; peduncle erect, slightly recurved when fruiting.

Fruit reddish, brownish or green, smooth or crenulated, with 3 dorsal keels, the central keel more prominent than the lateral keels, with prominent beak, 3–5 mm long (including beak).

Flowering: Warmer months

Distribution and occurrence: SE NSW and inland in the Riverina. Also southern Australia from WA to Tasmania; New Zealand.

Grows in permanent waterbodies.
NSW subdivisions: CC, SC, NT, CT, ST, CWS, SWS, SWP
Other Australian states: Vic. Tas. S.A. W.A.
