Description: Rhizomatous aquatic perennial with both submerged and floating leaves and emergent inflorescences on stems to 4 m long; turions produced in some forms.

Submerged leaves translucent, narrow-elliptic or linear-lanceolate to elliptic or broad-ovate, to 20 cm long and c. 10 mm wide, sessile or very shortly petiolate, often ± undulate and with a stipular sheath to c. 5 cm long embracing the stem above the axil; stipular sheath becoming laciniate with age; floating leaves relatively thick, to c. 10 cm long and 7 cm wide, petiolate, with usually 13–17 parallel veins.

Inflorescence a dense spike, emergent, to 5 cm long.

Nutlets 2–4 mm long, laterally compressed, smooth or tuberculate, with a short beak.


Flowering: spring–autumn.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in slowly flowing water of rivers and creeks to c. 3 m deep, widespread.

This description and the map apply to at least two species (P. cheesemanii and P. sulcatus); P. tricarinatus is now considered to be restricted to central Qld. The full scientific research has not yet been published, so details will be supplied here later.
