Description: Robust annual to 2 m high, glabrous.

Leaves with blade 1.5–4 cm wide; base auriculate, undulate.

Inflorescence of 3 or 4 racemes; racemes cylindrical and stiff, 8–15 cm long, 3–5 mm diam., arising from very slightly inflated leaf sheaths; spikelets sunk in pockets on rachis except at anthesis; glumes of lower spikelet equal, 6.5–7.5 mm long, rounded-obtuse to acute; keel margin minutely serrulate; glumes of upper spikelet both similar, 4.5–5.5 mm long; lemma of lower spikelet subequal to glumes, acute, with margin hyaline.

Distribution and occurrence: Probably introduced to Lord Howe Island; native to Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

On rocky platform just above high water. Jagged, weathered calcarenites.
