Verbena quadrangularis Vell. APNI* Synonyms: Verbena brasiliensis (in part) APNI*
Description: Annual herb 1–2.5 m high; branches erect, quadrangular, smooth, glabrous (except somewhat scabrous-pubescent distally).
Leaves 4–5 cm long, c. 1 cm wide; shortly petiolate to subsessile; sharply serrate or incised, at least above middle; base more or less cuneate-attenuate; apex more or less acuminate.
Inflorescence a lax terminal corymb with long branches ending in a mostly short spike. Bracts shorter than or scarcely as long as calyx. Calyx 5-toothed, 3–3.5 mm long. Corolla bright blue or violet to lilac or purple, 1.5–2 times as long as calyx; tube 2.5–3 mm long.
Flowering: Flowers throughout the year.
Distribution and occurrence: Occurs in the coastal, tablelands and western slopes of N.S.W.; also Qld and Vic. Native of S. America. Grows in open areas, such as Eucalyptus woodlands, along river banks and roadsides, and in other disturbed areas.
