Description: Tufted herb.

Leaves linear, flat to subterete, 2.5–30 cm long, c. 1 mm wide, basally wrinkled with short transverse ridges; leaf edge often paler than lamina, occasionally minutely tuberculate; sheathing base 1–4 cm long, brown to pink, not shiny.

Scape subterete to terete, 6–46 cm long, ribs occasionally present, occasionally tuberculate. Inflorescence obovoid, 5–7 mm long, 4–7 mm diam. Sterile bracts c. 4, bottom pair of sterile bracts often longer than the others; margins entire. Fertile bracts ovate to broad-ovate; central region tawny brown; wings golden brown; margins apically ciliate to lacerate. Lateral outer tepals narrow-obovate to obovate; central region brown, keel tuberculate; wings subequal or unequal, golden brown; margins apically ciliate, apex ciliate. Style c. 3 mm long, branches c. 0.3 mm long.

Seed ovoid, 0.4–0.5 mm

Flowering: late spring to summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in damp or swampy areas, often in heath; chiefly coastal districts, inland to Blackheath.
