Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. APNI*

Description: Mat-forming perennial with elongated wiry rhizomes and stolons to c. 25 cm long.

Leaf-sheaths glabrous; ligule a ciliate membrane; blade filiform or flat, to c. 10 cm long; 0.7–2.6 mm wide.

Inflorescence a solitary raceme, to c. 3.5 cm long. Spikelets solitary, lanceolate to ovate, 2–3.5 mm long, with 1 fertile floret, laterally compressed, falling entire; with pedicels 0.3–1 mm long. Lower glume absent or obscure; upper glume >100% spikelet length, 3-nerved, apex acute; muticous, or awned; awn 0–1 mm long. Fertile lemma 2–2.5 mm long, hyaline, 1-nerved; apex emarginate. Palea 50% lemma length, hyaline.

Planted as a lawn grass and sometimes naturalised.
