Genus Atherosperma Family Atherospermataceae

Description: Monoecious trees.

Leaves opposite, toothed to entire, with a strong sweet-spicy sassafras smell when crushed.

Flowers 4-merous, axillary, solitary, unisexual with male flowers above the female on each branchlet, enclosed in 2 bracts in the bud. Receptacle ± cupular. Perianth segments 8 in 2 whorls. Male flowers with numerous stamens and staminodes spirally arranged over inner face of receptacle. Female flowers with numerous staminodes, carpels c. 30. Receptacle cup-shaped and surrounding the hairy achenes.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, endemic Australia. Australia: 1 species, endemic.
