NEW SOUTH WALES FLORA ONLINE

A comprehensive botanical treatment in an Electronic format

INTRODUCTION

This site presents a demonstration of one approach to an electronic Flora of New South Wales. Data are derived from the printed Flora of New South Wales series, published by the UNSW Press, augmented with data from electronic sources maintained by the National Herbarium of New South Wales. Please note that data have not been fully checked for consistency, and are not fully up-to-date. This site is to be regarded as a prototype presented as a demonstration, and not necessarily as an authoritative resource. However, the updating of this site is one of our major priorities. Plant Name Search
Search for a species using either a scientific name (family, genus, species) or common name. Various options are available to restrict or expand (synonyms) the search. By default, a synonym will be returned if the name searched for does not match any accepted name but does match a synonym.
Index Search
Browse index of plant names. The index can be expanded to include synonyms or restricted by selecting one of the botanical subdivisions of N.S.W., and/or selecting only introduced plants or rare or threatened plants.
Spatial Search
Provides a list of names for a specified area of N.S.W. based on specimens lodged at the National Herbarium of New South Wales.

Also, the lists that are returned are warts-and-all lists that often include synonyms, informal names and hybrids. These will not link correctly to FloraOnline descriptions. Synonyms can be searched for using the Plant Name Search.
Identification Keys
Traditional dichotomous keys based on Flora of New South Wales volumes (UNSW Press)
Classification
Discusses the classification of flowering plants used at the National Herbarium of New South Wales.
Glossary of Botanical Terms
Provides definitions of botanical terms used in FloraOnline.
